15-21 June 2009 - Odessa, Ukraine
3rd WUKF Senior és Veteran World Championships
|
The World Championships for Seniors and Veterans was organized by the re-established World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF) in Odessa on 15-21 June 2009 attended also by the Hungarian team. According to the first information 54 national organizations from 34 countries participated in the competition and still more than 10 teams did not manage to get visa for the journey. The kumite categories in particular seemed to promise great surprises as karatekas from the post-Soviet Union could attend the Ukraine championships without visa.
The Hungarian team did again beyond expectations both in the kata and in the kumite categories.
The sad moment of the championship was that the Hungarian female kumite team (Asztalos, Bodnár, Négyökrű) has been disqualified after reaching the final in the rotation kumite event due to the caveat of the Russian team (who anyway failed against the Hungarian girls at 6:3) for the pre-timely change of a Hungarian competitor in the first round. It was the losing side who won the game..but Anett Asztalos and Emília Négyökrű got a revenge and sent off the Russians again in the first rounds of the individual matches.

The greatest moment of the world championships was that the Hungarian male kumite team (Dezső Horgász, Zoltán Szabó, Tamás Zoltán), after sending off the strong English and Portugal team, easily bet the Romanians in the semifinal who had been always finalists in the earlier championships.
Our team in the mixed category (Anett Asztalos, Enikő Bodnár, Dezső Horgász, Tamás Pénzes, Tamás Zoltán) also did even better than in Valencia and reached a 3rd place in kumite.
